About Pad & Pace

Read enough walking-pad roundups and you notice they are all written for the same person: someone with a room to put it in. The reviews talk about motor horsepower and app features and belt cushioning. They rarely tell you the folded height, and when they do it is buried in a spec block nobody formatted.

For a renter that is backwards. In a one-bedroom, the machine has to live somewhere the other twenty-three hours of the day. It has to come up the stairs on the day it arrives and go back down on the day you move. And it has to be quiet enough that the person underneath you does not start a conversation with the building manager.

Those are all questions with numeric answers, and the numbers are mostly published — they are just not compiled anywhere. So we compiled them. Pad & Pace tracks 8 walking pads and prints every published dimension, weight and noise figure with a label saying where it came from.

Stephen V. — Founder and writer.

Stephen V. is an enthusiast who is genuinely into this stuff. He walks while he works in a small space, which is the whole reason Pad & Pace exists — the machines are sold to people with a spare room, and he does not have one. He has not walked on the machines on this site. What he does is read the manuals and spec sheets, compile the published numbers, note which manufacturers publish a decibel figure and which quietly do not, and do the arithmetic: folded size against a real storage gap, deck height against desk clearance, unit weight against a third-floor walk-up. He holds no fitness credential and does not pretend to.

The one experience claim worth making here, and the only one we make: he walks while he works in a small space. That is why the site is written the way it is. It is not a claim about the products.

Some of what makes a site like this useful is what it refuses to say. The list, plainly:

• We will not tell you a machine is quiet if its manufacturer does not publish a figure. We will tell you nobody published one.
• We will not tell you how a belt feels underfoot, how a motor holds up after a year, or whether the deck flexes. Those need use, and we have not used them.
• We will not invent a credential. Nobody here is a trainer, a physiologist or a doctor, and nothing on this site is medical advice.
• We will not print a star rating we did not produce, a review count we cannot see, or a testimonial from a customer we do not have.
• We will not put a price in a sentence. Prices go stale; ours come from a live feed with the date attached, and they vanish rather than go stale.
