How much space do you need for a walking pad?

The published in-use footprints vary more than you would expect for machines that look the same in photographs — nearly 26 inches of length between the shortest and the longest.

Two of the machines we track publish no in-use footprint at all. On a product whose selling point is fitting into a small space, that is the specification you needed, and it is missing.

This is the number nobody publishes and everybody needs, so here it is explicitly as our allowance, not a manufacturer figure: plan about 12 inches of clear floor behind the rear of the deck.

The reasoning is straightforward. When you finish, you step backward off a belt that may still be moving. If there is a wall, a chair leg or a bookcase 4 inches behind the deck, you are stepping off onto something rather than onto floor. Twelve inches is the least that feels like room to do that safely.

None of the manufacturers we checked publish a required clearance. We looked, because it would have been a better number to give you than ours.

The front of the pad can sit close to a wall — that is not where you get on or off. Plan the space around the rear.

This is the constraint that catches people, because it is vertical and nobody thinks about it when they are measuring floor.

You stand on the pad, so its deck height is added to your own.The machines we track are 4.1 to 6.5 inches tall in use. A standard fixed desk is 29 to 30 inches to the surface. Stand on a 5 inch deck and that desk is effectively 24 to 25 inches relative to you — which is close to unusable for typing.

Which is why a walking pad usually implies a height-adjustable desk, and why the real question is not “does the pad fit under my desk” but “does my desk rise far enough once I am standing on the pad”.

The arithmetic, and the elbow-height rule of thumb it depends on, is worked through with numbers on our incline page — incline makes this worse, because it raises the deck further.

The one that decides whether you still own it in six months. A pad you cannot store lives in the middle of your living room, and a pad in the middle of your living room eventually goes on Craigslist.

Two things to notice. First, several machines publish no folded dimensions at all. Second, on the pads that fold in half, the folded height can be greater than the in-use height, because folding stacks the deck onto itself.

Say you are looking at the WalkingPad Z1 in a small living room, with a height-adjustable desk.

• In use: 56.1 x 22 in of floor, which is 8.6 sq ft.
• Plus step-off: add 12 in behind, so the working envelope is about 68 x 22 in, or 10.4 sq ft.
• Above: its 4.1 in deck is the lowest of the fold-in-half pads, so it costs you the least desk clearance of that group.
• Stored:31.8 x 22 x 5.4 in. That stands upright against a wall in a footprint of about 22 x 5.4 in — less than a square foot — or slides under a sofa clearing 6 in.

So the honest answer for that machine is: about 10 sq ft while you are walking, and under 1 sq ft the rest of the time. That gap is the entire product.
