Can you use a walking pad on carpet?
Yes, with a rigid board underneath. The interesting part is why — because the two real problems with carpet are not the ones the question usually implies.

Yes — put a rigid board between the machine and the pile. Carpet is not a noise problem; it is a stability and airflow problem. Pile compresses unevenly under a moving load, so the pad rocks and slowly creeps, and deep pile can close the air gap under the motor housing. A flat rigid layer fixes both.
Why this is not a noise question
Most people arrive at this question via noise. They have carpet, they are worried about the neighbour below, and carpet feels like it ought to help. It helps less than you would think, and that is worth settling first because it changes what you go and buy.
A walking pad makes two kinds of noise. Airbornenoise — motor hum, belt whirr — travels through air and mostly stays in your room. Carpet does absorb some of that, particularly at higher frequencies, so your own room will be a little quieter. That is a genuine benefit and it is the smaller one.
Structure-bornenoise is the footfall. Each step puts impact energy into the deck, through whatever the deck is resting on, into the floor structure, and it radiates out of the ceiling below. Interrupting that path takes mass and resilience — a dense mat, deliberately chosen. Residential carpet and its underlay are thin and light by comparison. They take the edge off; they do not solve it.
So if the neighbour is your actual question, read the noise guide rather than this one, and buy the mat. Carpet is not the answer you were hoping it was.

Problem one: rocking, then creep
A walking pad rests on a small number of feet — usually four, sometimes six — each of them a couple of square inches. On a hard floor those feet share the machine’s load through a rigid plane, and the deck stays flat.
Pile does not behave that way. Each foot sinks to a slightly different depth depending on the pile beneath it and the load above it, so the deck is no longer flat. Then you start walking, which shifts load from one end of the machine to the other with every step. Each shift compresses one side and lets the other rebound. The machine rocks.
Rocking has two downstream effects. The obvious one is that it feels unstable underfoot, particularly on a machine with no handrail — which is every pad on this site except the UREVO Strol 2E. The less obvious one is creep: a machine that rocks gradually walks across the room, usually toward the end you step off from. People report coming back after a week to find the pad two feet from where they left it, and this is the mechanism.
Which specifications resist it? Mass and footprint. A heavier machine with a larger contact area compresses the pile more fully and more evenly, and has more inertia against the rocking impulse. Problem two: the air gap under the deck
Across the 6 flat-deck pads on this site that publish an in-use height, the decks sit between 4.1 and 7 inches off the floor, and the motor and controller live in that space underneath. The machine is designed on the assumption that there is a flat surface below it and air moving through the gap.
Push it into deep pile and the gap partially closes. The pile rises around the base, the intake and exhaust paths get restricted, and the enclosure is working with less airflow than it was designed for.
We want to be careful about what we are claiming here, because it would be easy to overstate it. We have not measured motor temperatures on carpet against a hard floor, and we are not going to tell you what the consequence is or how long it takes. What we can say is that restricting the ventilation path of a motor enclosure is not something any manufacturer designs for, and that a rigid board restores exactly the condition the machine was built to sit on. The fix is cheap and the uncertainty is not worth carrying.
This is also why the depth of the pile matters more than whether “carpet” is present at all. Low-pile or commercial-grade carpet compresses very little and largely sidesteps both problems. Deep plush pile is where both of them live.
What the makers actually publish
Here is the finding that shaped this page, and it is a short one.
We read the manufacturer specification page for every walking pad on this site. Not one of them addresses carpet. No statement recommending a hard, flat surface. No warning against pile depth. No mention of it in any spec table we compiled.
That is not the same as saying the manuals are silent — setup instructions ship in the box and we have not bought these machines to read them. But the published, checkable, pre-purchase documentation says nothing, and carpet is in a very large share of the rooms these things are sold into.
So the reasoning on this page is ours, built from published dimensions and weights and from how a machine with feet behaves on a compressible surface. We would rather label it that way than dress it up as guidance from a manual we have not read.
The fix, in order
Ordered by how much difference each makes. The first item is most of the answer.
1. A rigid panel, cut oversized
Plywood, hardboard, or an equivalent rigid sheet, cut a few inches larger than the machine’s footprint on every side. Oversized matters: if a foot sits near the edge of the board, the board itself tips into the pile and you have reinvented the problem.
This restores the flat plane the machine was designed for, spreads the point loading across the carpet, and reopens the air gap underneath. One purchase, all three problems.
2. A dense mat, on top of the board
If you want grip between board and machine, or you want some impact absorption for the floor below, put a proper equipment mat over the board. The common mistake is putting it under, which just adds another compressible layer between the rigid surface and the floor.
3. Account for the extra height
Board plus mat adds its own thickness to the deck height, and if the pad lives at a standing desk that comes straight out of your desk’s remaining travel. A machine with a 4.1 inch deck on a 0.75 inch board is a 4.85 inch deck. Run that through the desk arithmetic before you cut anything.
4. Or: try it bare, on low pile
On short dense carpet, with a heavy machine and a large footprint, you may find it sits perfectly flat and stays put. Use it for a week and watch for two things: any rocking underfoot, and whether the machine has moved from where you left it. If neither happens, you do not need the board.

What should I put under a walking pad on carpet?

Will a walking pad damage carpet?
We have not run one on carpet to find out, so we will not tell you it is harmless. What is predictable from the published specifications is the load: the pads we track weigh 40 to 69.5 lb, and that plus your body weight is concentrated onto a handful of small feet. Pile does not recover quickly from that kind of point loading. A rigid board spreads it over a far larger area, which is a second reason to use one.
Is a walking pad quieter on carpet?
In your own room, slightly — pile absorbs some high-frequency airborne sound. For the apartment below you, much less than people expect. The impact energy from each footfall still goes through the pile, into the subfloor, and out of the ceiling below, and pile is thin and light compared with what it takes to interrupt that path. If a downstairs neighbour is the reason you are asking, the useful purchase is a dense mat with real mass, not the carpet you already have.
Can you use a walking pad on a rug?
The same reasoning applies, with one addition: a rug can slide, and a machine that is rocking on top of a rug that is sliding is a worse combination than either alone. If the rug is thin and low-pile and lies over a hard floor, a walking pad on top of it with a board is straightforward. If it is thick or loose, take it up and put the machine on the floor.
