What speed should you set a walking pad to?

Every listing in this category advertises its top speed. At a desk that number is close to irrelevant, and the one that is not is usually missing.

For typing, set it near the bottom of the dial and work up in 0.2 mph steps until your accuracy drops, then come back one step. For calls and reading you can go faster. Published top speeds here run 3 to 6.2mph — and at a desk you will not use the top of any of them.

Your hands set the speed, not your legs

The mistake almost everyone makes in the first week is treating a walking pad like a treadmill: pick a pace that feels like exercise, get on, discover after ten minutes that you cannot type, and conclude the machine does not work for desk use.

What is actually happening is a mismatch of constraints. Your legs will happily walk at 3 mph for an hour. Your hands will not hold accuracy at 3 mph, because the whole upper body is moving in a way it does not when you stand still, and precision suffers before endurance does.

So the correct method is not to pick a number off a website, including this one. It is:

  1. Start at the machine’s minimum.
  2. Type something you can judge — real work, not a typing test — for a few minutes.
  3. Increase by 0.2 or 0.3 mph.
  4. Repeat until your error rate is obviously up, then drop back one step.

That is your typing speed. It will be lower than you expected and lower than the speed you would pick if you were just walking, and it is the only number that matters for the use case most people buy these machines for.

The bottom of the range is the specification that matters

Here is the frustrating part: minimum speed is the single most decision-relevant speed figure for desk use, and it is barely published. Every listing leads with a top speed, most spec tables give only a top speed, and our own product table carries only the maximum for that reason.

Where minimum speeds are stated, they matter enormously:

The WalkingPad P1 starts at 0.3 mph.That is a shuffle rather than a walk, and it is the slowest figure we have found on any machine on this site. For detailed work, it is genuinely a different product from a machine that starts at 1 mph — it gives you a setting where you are moving and your hands are steady.

The DeerRun starts at 0.6 mph, which is the other published minimum we have. Most of the rest begin somewhere in the 0.5 to 1 mph region without stating it clearly.

The practical consequence: if you are buying primarily for typing, ask about minimum speed before top speed. It is the specification most likely to determine whether you use the machine daily or twice a week. It is also the P1’s main argument against the otherwise better Z1.

Top speed first, with deck length beside it — because deck length is what actually limits how fast a machine is usable. Stride lengthens with pace, and a short deck runs out before the motor does.

Read those two columns together rather than separately. A 6.2 mph top speed on a 40.2 inch belt (the UREVO Strol 2E) is a different proposition from 6.2 mph on a 47.6 inch belt, because stride lengthens as pace rises and the deck has to absorb your forward and backward drift as well as the stride.

That is the honest reason the category settles at walking speed: not motor power, but deck length and the absence of anything to hold. Belt length against real stride, worked through.

Two or three settings, not one

Almost everyone who uses one of these daily ends up with a small set of speeds rather than a single one, matched to what they are doing. The pattern that comes up repeatedly:

A crawl, for detailed work.The lowest the machine will go. Spreadsheets, code, anything needing precise mouse control. On most machines this is barely movement, and that is the point — it is the setting that stops you standing still.

A walk, for calls and reading. Faster, because your hands are free. This is where most people spend most of their time and it is usually the speed they would have picked first if they were not typing.

A brisk walk, for deliberate blocks.Twenty minutes between meetings, not while working. Near the top of the machine’s range.

And a fourth setting that is not a speed: off. The habit that most reliably keeps these machines in use is stepping off for the tasks that do not tolerate walking, rather than slowing down until everything is tolerable and nothing is comfortable. The four habits that decide whether it is still out in six months.

Speed, noise and the flat below

One thing worth knowing if you are in an apartment: speed is the lever you actually control over the noise your neighbour hears.

The dominant path to the flat below is impact energy from your foot landing, transmitted through the deck into the floor structure. That energy scales with how hard you land, and you land harder as you walk faster. Motor noise also rises with belt speed, but that is airborne and mostly stays in your room.

So slowing down does more about the neighbour problem than any purchase can. It is free, it is immediate, and it is more effective than the difference between two unverifiable decibel claims. The full argument about which noise goes where, and what a mat can and cannot do about it.

Questions people actually ask

What speed should you walk at on a walking pad while working?

Slower than most people start at. Typing accuracy degrades with pace well before walking becomes hard work, so the usable range for keyboard work sits at the bottom of the dial rather than the middle. The practical approach is to start at the machine's minimum, work up in small steps until your typing starts to suffer, and then set it just below that. Calls, reading and meetings tolerate a faster pace than typing does — most people end up using two or three settings across a day rather than one.

What is the slowest speed a walking pad will go?

It varies more than the top speed does, and almost nobody markets it. The WalkingPad P1 starts at 0.3 mph, the slowest we have found on any machine on this site — a genuine shuffle. How fast do walking pads go?

Published top speeds across the eight pads we track run from 3 mph (Lifepro PacerMini) to 6.2 mph (UREVO Strol 2E). Everything else is between 3.7 and 4 mph. So with one exception the category tops out at a brisk walk, which is a consequence of the short deck and the absence of a handrail rather than an arbitrary limit.

Is 2 mph a good walking pad speed?

It is in the range most people settle into for working, and it is a reasonable place to start experimenting from. Whether it is right for you depends on your stride, your keyboard and what you are doing — the honest test is your own typing accuracy rather than any number a website gives you. Increase in 0.2 or 0.3 mph steps and notice where your error rate rises.

Does walking speed affect noise?

It affects the part that reaches your neighbour, yes. Faster walking means harder footfalls and more impact energy into the floor structure, which is the dominant transmission path in an apartment. Motor noise also rises with belt speed, but that is the part you hear and they mostly do not. If you are worried about the flat below, slowing down is more effective than anything you can buy.

Why does the maximum speed matter so little at a desk?

Because you will never use it. The constraint at a desk is your hands, not your legs, and hands give out at a pace far below the top of any of these machines' ranges. Top speed only matters if you also intend to use the machine for exercise sessions away from the desk — in which case it matters a lot, and only one machine on this site reaches jogging pace.
